Do QR Codes Expire? How Long Do They Really Last?

Since the address is incorporated into the pattern at the time the code is formed, QR codes do not typically expire. However, what usually goes dead is whatever sits behind it.

Search around and you’ll find the same story over and over that somebody made a QR code months ago, printed it, and now scanning it brings up a message about the link having expired.

In such cases, what actually stops working is link! Free generators switch off their redirects when trials end, and destination pages QR codes point to can also get moved or deleted.

So, What Breaks Is Almost Never the Code!

A QR code that stops working has one specific broken link somewhere in the chain between the printed square and the page it’s meant to open.

That chain only has three parts: the printed pattern, a redirect in the middle if a generator put one there, and the destination page at the end.

The pattern almost never fails, which leaves the other two. Once you know which link broke, you know whether you’re looking at a reprint, a bill, or a five-minute fix on your own site.

Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

In simple words, a static QR code holds your real destination inside the pattern, so a scan sends the phone straight there with nothing in between.

Meanwhile, a dynamic QR code holds a short address belonging to the company that made it. Scanning one lands you on their server first, and that server forwards you to your real destination.

The forwarding step is the part you’re renting, and it’s the only part of the arrangement with an expiry date attached.

That said, you may wonder why do people use dynamic QR codes in the first place? Well, there are two reasons for this and it may make sense for many:

• Because the printed pattern only holds the company’s short address, they can repoint the forward on their server, and every code already out in the world follows along. If your destination genuinely changes every month, that flexibility is the whole product.
• The second is scan tracking and in simple words since every scan passes through the provider’s server on its way to your page, they can provide performance data related to your QR code scans like the overall scan count, locations, and devices.

A static code gives up both perks and gets you something else: nothing to renew, nobody to pay, and no company whose bad quarter can kill your print run.

Why Free QR Code Generators Let Your Code Go Dead

Now, if you made your code on a free generator and it stopped working, it’s almost certainly a dynamic code whose redirect got switched off.

The generators are open about this in their own documentation, which is worth reading before you commit anything to print. Four things commonly kill a rented redirect:

• The Free Trial Ends. QRStuff’s free tier expires dynamic codes after 30 days and caps them at 50 scans each, which rules it out for anything you plan to print.
• You Hit a Scan Limit. Plans that meter scans stop forwarding once you pass the monthly cap, so a code that worked on Monday can fail on Friday with nothing changed at your end.
• The Subscription Lapsed. QR Code Generator’s support docs explain that dynamic codes get switched off when a trial or plan ends and start landing people on its own service page, while static codes in the same account carry on working. The data is kept, so paying again turns the dynamic ones back on.
• The Platform Shut Down. If the company hosting your redirect closes or retires the product, every dynamic code that passed through it stops forwarding, and there’s no account you can pay to bring it back.

So whether you have to pay to keep a QR code active depends on who owns the middle step, and when that is someone else, their bill is what keeps your code alive.

The Failure Modes on Your Side of the Line

Uniqode’s roundup of scan failures puts dead or expired links at the top of the list, affecting 29% of consumers, and a good share of those died on the destination side rather than the redirect side.

The Destination Page Moved, Got Unpublished, or Disappeared

The page behind your code is an ordinary WordPress page, subject to all the ordinary things. Rename its slug and the old address stops resolving. Switch it to draft after a campaign, or delete it outright, and every scan lands on a missing page.

Seasonal pages are where this catches people most often. You build an event registration form, put it on a page for the spring event, print the code on 300 postcards, then tidy the page away in the summer. The postcards are still out there, and they still do exactly what you asked them to do.

The Code Went to Print, then You Changed Where it Points

The address freezes into the pattern the moment a QR code is generated. Nothing you change afterwards reaches the copies already out in the world. Repoint the code on your screen and the 5,000 flyers in the storeroom carry on sending people to the old address.

With a static code there’s no fixing that after the fact. What you can do is catch it before the file ever leaves your computer, and I’ll come back to that further down.

Point Your Code at an Address You Already Own

The usual advice at this point is to buy a dynamic code, and you can see why companies selling them frame the choice as static or dynamic.

That framing quietly assumes the redirect belongs to somebody else, when it doesn’t have to. If you run your own WordPress site, you already own a stable address and you already control what sits at it.

Say you run a catering business and you want a table tent on every table that opens your online order form. Put the form on a page and point the code at that page.

From then on the only person who can break it is you. If you haven’t picked a home for the form yet, there are several ways to publish one.

How to Create a QR Code for Your Form in WPForms

WPForms has a built-in QR Code setting that does exactly this, and it lives inside the form builder rather than in a separate tool.

Open the form you want to promote, then go to Settings » General. Scroll to the bottom of the panel, and you’ll find a QR Code dropdown set to None.

That dropdown decides where a scan sends people, and you have two options. Choose the page your form lives on, or paste in your form’s own URL.

So, in that case set the dropdown to Custom URL instead and a Destination URL field appears. Type your form’s own address into it.

Your code carries the WPForms logo in the center by default. Swapping it for your own brand mark through the Logo dropdown requires a Pro license or higher.

Once you’ve chosen a destination and selected the logo, click Generate QR Code. You’ll see a spinner, then a green checkmark, and your finished code appears in the preview.

After your code has been generated, the Copy and Download buttons will replace the Generate QR Code button. When you choose any one, you will be prompted to select a format.

PNG Image is a normal image file, and it’s the right pick for a website, an email, or a slide. SVG Vector is the one to choose for anything going to a printer, because it scales to any size without going soft at the edges.

What Happens When You Repoint a Code You Already Printed

A print run is the one step in all of this you can’t undo, so it’s worth five minutes of checking. This is the short list I’d go through before committing anything to ink.

• Download the SVG: Vector scales up to a banner without the edges going fuzzy. PNG is fine on a screen and risky at size.
• Scan the file with your own phone: Open the downloaded code on your monitor and point your camera at it. It takes ten seconds and it catches a wrong destination before the printer does.
• Confirm the destination page is published and staying that way: If it’s a campaign page somebody will tidy up in three months, pick a more permanent home now.
• Check both copies if you duplicated the form: A duplicated form keeps the same QR settings and the same generated code, so both forms point at one destination until you regenerate one of them.
• Decide whether you want to count scans: The code itself reports nothing back, so if you want numbers you’ll need to see how many people follow a link on the destination page.

If your code points at a page and the form moves to a different page, then yes, you’ll need to select the new destination and generate a fresh code.

Moving the form on its own doesn’t change what an existing code opens. If you’d rather not reprint, put a redirect on the original address so the printed code keeps landing people in the right place.
