Editing Forms With WPForms AI

Would you like to update your forms without clicking through every field setting one by one? With Smart Edit, WPForms AI lets you edit your forms from inside the form builder using natural language.

With a single prompt, WPForms AI can add and remove fields, reorder and relabel them, update form settings, set up conditional logic, build calculation formulas, and edit notifications and confirmations. It can also review your form and suggest improvements before making any changes.

This tutorial covers how to use WPForms AI to edit your existing forms.

Requirements:

  • WPForms must be installed and activated on your WordPress site. This feature is available in both the free version and the paid versions of WPForms.
  • Ensure that you’ve installed the latest version of WPForms to meet the minimum required version for WPForms AI.

Before you get started, make sure you have a form to edit. If you haven’t created one yet, see our guide on creating your first form or use one of our form templates to get up and running quickly.

Accessing Smart Edit in the Form Builder

To begin, open an existing form to access the form builder. Then, click the Smart Edit button in the bottom-right corner of the builder to open the chat panel.

The welcome screen shows a few example questions to get you started quickly. Click any one to send it as your prompt, or type your own request in the chat box at the bottom.

Note: If the Smart Edit button does not appear, switch from the Setup panel to the Fields or Settings panel. The button is hidden on the Setup panel.

Sending Your First Prompt

Type your request into the chat box and press Enter or click the send icon. For example, type ‘Add a Phone field after Email and add a placeholder that says Enter your best phone number’.

WPForms AI processes your request and applies each change to the form behind the panel. Once finished, it displays a summary of every action it took, including a short headline, a description of the result, and a bulleted list of specific changes with field names and IDs.

Below each response, you’ll find a few action icons:

  • Thumbs up / thumbs down — Rate the response
  • Retry — Run the same prompt again to generate a different response
  • Trash — Clear the chat history

Refining With Follow-Up Prompts

WPForms AI remembers the conversation, so follow-up prompts work naturally. After adding a Phone field, type ‘Now make it required’ and the AI will know which field you mean.

Here are some prompt patterns that work well:

  • Adding fields: “Add a Phone field after Email.”
  • Changing settings: “Change the form title to Customer Feedback Form.”
  • Editing notifications: “Create a new admin notification sent to [email protected] with the subject New feedback received.”
  • Building calculations: “Add a Number field called Quantity and a Single Item field called Unit Price, then calculate a Total field by multiplying Quantity by Unit Price.”
  • Setting up conditional logic: “Show the Resume Upload field only when Working Arrangement is On-site.”
  • Reviewing the form: “How can I improve this form?” or “Review this form for a basic contact use case.”

Note: When you ask WPForms AI to review or improve your form, it doesn’t make changes right away. Instead, it returns a list of suggested improvements with reasoning for each one. Reply with yes to apply the changes, or refine your request to apply only some of the suggestions.

Clearing the Chat History

To start a fresh conversation, click the trash icon below any AI response.

The conversation resets and a new session begins. Your form is not affected. Any changes WPForms AI already applied stay in place.

Note: Chat history is also cleared automatically when you exit the form builder or refresh the page. Your form changes are saved with the form, but the conversation is not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below, we’ve answered some of the top questions about using WPForms AI to edit forms.

Which forms can I edit with WPForms AI?

Every form on your site. WPForms AI can edit forms you built manually, started from a template, or generated with WPForms AI. It is not limited to AI-generated forms.

Which field types does WPForms AI support for editing?

WPForms AI supports adding, editing, and reordering most WPForms field types, including Single Line Text, Paragraph Text, Email, Name, Phone, Number, Number Slider, URL, Dropdown, Multiple Choice, Checkboxes, File Upload, Date / Time, Address, Rating, Hidden, HTML, Divider, Section, Custom Captcha, and supported payment fields like Stripe Credit Card.

The following field types are not supported for editing, even if they already exist in a form:

  • Layout field
  • Repeater field
  • Entry Preview field
  • PayPal Commerce field
  • Square field

Is there a daily limit on WPForms AI?

Yes. A daily rate limit applies across all WPForms AI features, including editing, generating forms, generating choices, and generating calculations. When you reach the limit, all AI features pause until the next day.

Will WPForms AI affect my existing form entries?

No, in most cases. WPForms AI preserves field IDs when adding, removing, or updating fields, so existing entries stay linked to the correct field.

The one exception is field type conversion. Asking the AI to convert a field to a different type (for example, Text to Dropdown) deletes the old field and creates a new one with a new ID. Entries already submitted against the deleted field will not carry over to the new field. Plan field conversions carefully if you have important entry data.

What if WPForms AI’s response isn’t what I wanted?

You have a few ways to recover:

  • Click the retry icon (circular arrow) below the response to run the same prompt again and get a different result.
  • Send a follow-up prompt that clarifies what you wanted.
  • Press Ctrl+Z on Windows or Cmd+Z on Mac to undo. Each AI response counts as one undo step, so a single undo reverses every change in that response. The standard undo and redo arrows in the bottom-left of the form builder work the same way.
  • Click the trash icon to clear the chat history and start over.

To roll back further than the chat history, restore an earlier Form Revision from the form builder. WPForms AI creates a revision automatically before each AI edit.

Can I use WPForms AI for editing on the free version?

Yes, you can edit forms with WPForms AI on the free version. When you click the Smart Edit button for the first time, a popup window will appear prompting you to enable WPForms AI. To proceed, click on the Enable AI Features button in this popup.

Enable AI features wpforms

Once enabled, you can start editing your forms with WPForms AI.

Can I edit my form in other languages?

Yes. WPForms AI accepts prompts in many languages. Type your request in the language you prefer and the AI will respond and apply changes accordingly.

Why doesn’t the Smart Edit button appear in my form builder?

If the Smart Edit button is missing from the bottom-right of the builder, check these two things in order:

  • Switch from the Setup panel to the Fields or Settings panel. The button is hidden on the Setup panel.
  • On paid versions, confirm that your license key is entered and active under WPForms » Settings » General. If your license has expired, renew it to restore access.

If the button is still missing, confirm that the Hide AI Features toggle under WPForms » Settings » Misc is set to OFF.

That’s it! You now know how to use WPForms AI to update your existing forms with natural language.
